A Staycation in Downtown San Antonio
All opinions are my own.
Looking for hotels near Riverwalk? Look no further. If you ever get a chance to visit historic San Antonio, Texas, make visiting downtown a priority! The rustic buildings, cobblestone paths, gorgeous parks, and of course, the Riverwalk! You won’t want to miss it. Read on to learn about my luxurious, relaxing stay at Hotel Valencia Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio.
My first visit to San Antonio was nearly two decades ago! I was 19 and visited the area with my family. We didn’t vacation much and when we did, it was to visit attractions in state like water parks, theme parks, etc. Upon entering the city, I instantly fell in love. Little did I know, I would call San Antonio home, just a year later!
We stayed downtown and spent 3 days wandering downtown, checking out the Rivercenter Mall, walking the Riverwalk, dining outdoors on the river, and enjoying the downtown attractions. Now, 16 years later, I return to stay downtown and enjoy a staycation with the hubby.
My Stay at Hotel Valencia
Now, when I say the hotel is on the Riverwalk, I mean it! I was actually pretty surprised by this. Although Hotel Valencia Riverwalk has the word “riverwalk” in their name, I didn’t actually think it was on the Riverwalk. I thought it would be nearby. What a pleasant surprise!
When we planned the trip, our goal was to have a true staycation. Wandering downtown, going shopping, and hitting up nightlife was not on the itenerary. We get a chance to experience downtown often so we’ve experienced all that and more, many times. Our goal was to lock ourselves in the hotel and have a truly relaxing weekend. It helped that it was a stormy weekend, which made for a quiet stay (not too much traffic or tourists).
Our hotel room was clean, nicely decorated and because we were on the 3rd floor, we got to experience the courtyard which was accessible through our room’s double doors to the area. Amazing!
This chair and ottoman was one of my favorite parts of the room. You sink down into the chair, sit your coffee on the side table and relax while scrolling your tablet or watching TV. It might not sound like a lot but if you’re a busy mom like me, the quiet, simple things count. It was incredible!
One part of the room I loved was the long bar beneath the television. It was home to a desk, coffee maker, dresser and a great counter for my purse and other small belongings (yes, those ARE Shipley donuts).
The bathroom in our room was the perfect size. It had a one sink vanity and came with the most delicious-smelling toiletries. I took them all home! The soap had a scrub built in (salt, sand, or something similar) and it was truly spa-like feeling to use it in the shower. I’m not a bathroom diva but I do love a nice, clean bathroom with hot water and great soap. Hotel Valencia hit all the marks here!
Unfortunately I failed to take some food photos, as my husband gobbled up the breakfast we ordered before I could whip out my camera. He got breakfast tacos (potato/egg and bean/cheese, I think). If you’re not a San Antonio native, I have to mention that breakfast tacos are a staple here! The tacos he ordered from the hotel were THE BEST BREAKFAST TACOS HE HAD EVER EATEN, his words! So, compliments to the chef. He is a picky eater and it takes a lot to impress him.
The Hotel and Staff
The staff were super friendly and professional. We made a few calls to the Service desk for valet, to get a toothbrush/toothpaste sent to us, and to get our room serviced later in the day and we were greeted nicely and had our requests honored quickly.
The hotel itself was beautiful. There were several lounge areas and it felt very warm and welcoming.
The hotel was filled with charm and a nice escape from the large chain hotels that we normally stay at. It was a truly lovely, relaxing experience and we will be staying here again. Here’s a lineup of their awesome amenities:
- Complimentary breakfast, served daily
- Complimentary WI-FI
- Dorrego’s restaurant
- Naranja lounge and bar
- Daily housekeeping
- In-room spa services
- Free daily morning newspaper
What You’ll Love
The Hotel Valencia Riverwalk cannot be beat for location and elegant luxury. It’s an affordable destination in the heart of downtown. You can walk to nearby restaurants and bars. Walgreens is on the corner! When visiting downtown, if it’s your first time, you won’t wanna miss the historic Alamo and The Riverwalk. It’s an experience you’ll be glad you made time for, and all a short distance from Hotel Valencia.
Enjoy the traditional King room (where we stayed, below) or splurge and go all out on one of their amazing suites!
